The European Union is starting a new cooperation project to work together with Mozambique in the fight against corruption
The objective of the new project to combat corruption in Mozambique is to prevent, combat and track corruption systematically and efficiently while also including the gender perspective. This project is part of the “Good Governance and Development” (BGD) pillar of action of the European Union. Spanish institutions will work in the country for 42 months together with their counterparts to achieve these objectives. This action is co-financed by the European Union and by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), who will also manage it together with FIIAPP.
For the government of Mozambique, the fight against corruption is a national priority. After the publication of a report by the International Monetary Fund in 2016 that pointed out the need to make improvements in Mozambique’s state-run financial system, the country’s institutions will work together with their Spanish counterparts in supporting the development of professional justice and civil society associations and in strengthening judicial institutions.
Among the project’s main partners are the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Justice, the Superior Council of the Judiciary, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office and the Central Cabinet for Combating Corruption. On the European side, there will be specialists from the Ministry of Justice , the Attorney General’s Office and the General Council of the Judiciary.
The project will carry out different activities, for example, to support the Judicial School (judicial career), continuous training, design and risk assessment and the diagnosis and improvement of information and management systems. It will also work to support the improvement in promotion of judges and prosecutors and in the formation of civil society networks. All this in the form of technical assistance, international internships, job training, equipment and software training, among others.
