The European project being carried out in Nigeria has donated materials to a shelter that assists victims of trafficking
Nigeria has several shelters that advise and provide important assistance to victims of trafficking, including minors, giving them psychosocial support, vocational training and accommodation.
One of the activities of the A-TIPSOM project focuses on improving and renovating some of these shelters so that, in turn, they can improve the quality of support for the protection of victims of trafficking by providing comprehensive equipment and services in line with their needs. Under this activity, 21 shelters in Nigeria, which belong to NACTAL (Network of CSOs Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour) and NAPTIP (National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons), will receive support from the project.
One of these shelters is the Media Campaign Against Human Trafficking, MeCAHT, to which the project has donated 52 items, including beds, mattresses, fridges, fans, blankets, mosquito nets and dishes.
In the face of the global battle to contain COVID-19, at which time Nigerians are following the order to stay home, service providers need suitablematerials to improve the comfort of trafficking victims staying in shelters, so this material has arrived at one of the best possible times.
The manager of the MeCAHT shelter, Ms. Kabadiya Kure, thanked the A-TIPSOM team and the European Union, and assured them that the donation will improve the support services for victims of trafficking.
For her part, Ms. Carol Shalom, representing the NACTAL National President and current NACTAL-FCT Coordinator, praised the project team and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that victims of trafficking receive the necessary support.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
A-TIPSOM started in 2018, through an agreement between the European Union and the Government of Nigeria, with the aim of reducing human trafficking and smuggling of migrants at the national, regional and international levels, with particular emphasis on women and children. The project addresses these issues through the 5 “P’s”: Prevention, Protection, Policy, Partnership and Prosecution.
The project, funded by the European Union and implemented by FIIAPP, works with the main Nigerian agencies, such as NAPTIP, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Nigerian Police and NACTAL, the network of civil society organisations. The project has specialists from the Policía Nacional to carry out the activities.
