Thanks to the collaboration of EU-ACT, security forces have carried out three drug seizures and dismantled an organised crime group
The EU-ACT project in Ukraine has delivered several batches of fast drug tests to the Ukrainian security forces benefiting from the project that the European Union funds in this country: the State Border Guard Service, the Ukrainian Security Service and the Narcotics Department of the Ukrainian National Police.
Thanks to the use of these tests and the work of the Ukrainian police agencies, it has been possible to carry out several drug seizures and paralyse an organised crime group.
The tests delivered by the project managed by FIIAPP, EU-ACT, are an essential instrument to identify controlled substances during investigations for drug trafficking. Fast tests help investigators determine whether a substance may be illegal and consequently take appropriate measures, both to conduct a forensic analysis in laboratories and to arrest suspects in the course of a drug seizure operation.
The use of this tool provided by EU-ACT has had remarkable results: In Odessa, the Ukrainian Security Service detected more than 30 kilograms of cocaine that was intended to be brought into Ukraine from Latin America. Just a week later, an operation by this same Security Service dismantled a Kiev-based international organised crime group, seizing cocaine, ecstasy and other types of drugs worth more than 2.5 million hryvnia, equivalent to approximately 80,000 euro. Finally, the State Border Guard Service seized 20 kg of cannabis at one of the checkpoints on the Ukraine-Poland border.
