Both countries have established collaboration protocols between agents responsible for identifying and prosecuting traffickers and traffickers
The FIIAPP office in Abuja, Nigeria, has hosted the first coordination meeting between the authorities of Niger and Nigeria under the umbrella of the teams from ECI-Niger and A-TIPSOM Nigeria projects, funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP.
The objective of the meeting was the establishment of collaboration mechanisms between the agents responsible for identifying and pursuing smugglers and traffickers of persons in the above-mentioned countries. Thanks to this meeting, knowledge regarding the pursuit procedures of both States was expanded, and the basis for future collaboration protocols was laid down
In this sense, it was proposed to improve communication mechanisms and to avoid bottlenecks between the different authorities in charge of carrying out operations in the pursuit of smugglers and traffickers of persons.
Although there are various collaboration agreements and protocols between Niger and Nigeria, this meeting represented the first contact between both countries which enabled the exchange of information and the improvement of an effective communication channel for the fight against human trafficking.
The main objective of the A-TIPSOM project is to reduce human trafficking and the irregular smuggling of migrants, at national and regional levels, as well as between Nigeria and the European Union. In this sense, the project aims to improve the capacity of the Nigerian Government to address the problem with special emphasis being put on women and children, the main victims of trafficking.
The project to combat criminal networks of illegal immigration and human trafficking in Niger, ECI-Niger, aims to support the Nigerien Government and contribute to the fight against criminal networks linked to illegal immigration, human trafficking and the traffic of migrants in the country, while promoting the creation of an area of international protection against these crimes.
