In this country, rural women are 10% of the population and play a decisive role in the maintenance and improvement of rural livelihoods
EUROsociAL+ and representatives of the Colombian Ministry of Justice and Law
Through the EUROsociAL+ programme, financed by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP, and accompanied by the Colombian Ministry of Justice and Law, work is being done to put mechanisms in place to guarantee access to justice for the rural population in a situation of poverty, with legal advice and special training for women on their rights and access to justice.
This action is part of the Peace Agreement in Colombia, the first point of which contains the “Integral Rural Reform” with the objective of achieving the democratization of access to land for the benefit of farmers, and especially rural women without land or with insufficient land, and of the rural communities most affected by poverty, abandonment and conflict.
The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women also recognizes the need to improve the protection of the human rights of rural women, given that policies and initiatives often do not include a gender perspective.
The European Union in Colombia, through EUROsociAL+, has been tackling this problem since 2018, with the design and preparation of a diagnosis that highlights significant obstacles to access to justice and land for rural women in Colombia.
Likewise, Colombia has been involved in an exchange of South-South experiences with Guatemala and El Salvador, two countries that overcame an armed conflict and undertook agrarian reforms after the signing of their respective Peace Accords.
