The first national Bridging the Gap meeting in Paraguay took place recently. The European Union financed this project, management of which was headed by FIIAPP, and this meeting was held within the framework of the tenth Meeting of Organisations of and for People with Disabilities.
The event was attended by representatives from organisations of and for people with disabilities from 15 departments around the country, who agreed that the 2015-2030 National Action Plan for the Rights of People with Disabilities will be the roadmap for future decisions, both in legislation and in the budget allocated to the rights of people with disabilities.
In addition, attendees also validated the 2019-2020 Working Plan for the Bridging the Gap/Acortando distancias project, which, in turn, contributes to the National Action Plan by building indicators and targets that allow state plans and programmes to be monitored and evaluated. These indicators will provide information on the State’s progress and challenges in respecting, protecting and fulfilling the rights of people with disabilities, so that the necessary adjustments can be made to ensure compliance.
The Minister and Executive Secretary of the National Secretariat for the Human Rights of People with Disabilities (SENADIS), César Martínez, has declared that the diversity of the actors involved is a “positive sign of movement towards the goal of building an increasingly inclusive society”. The event also included a space for reflection on “women and disability” as well as various workshops and discussions in which the lines of action for strengthening organisations of and for people with disabilities were defined, in addition to improving their domestic and international coordination.
