EuroMed Justice participate in the United Nations General Assembly

Promoting responses based on rule of law from the criminal justice system is a fundamental part of the global effort against terrorism. Nevertheless, Member States face challenges in obtaining evidence that can be used in legal proceedings. 

One of the events of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly revolves around this issue . Four global initiatives developed to support Member States in the collection and exchange of evidence are being discussed at this session promoted, among others, by the European Union . 

Terrorism is a global threat. Information related to these activities is often on the battlefield and, therefore, inaccessible to prosecutors and investigators. That is why forms of judicial cooperation are required. 

In this sense, EuroMed Justice , a project managed by the FIIAPP and funded by the European Union, is participating in the session on legal access to digital information, its challenges and best practices, sharing the manual prepared with EuroMed Police . The practical guide prepared jointly by the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is also being presented. 

A preliminary session focuses on issues of context , with reference to the Abuja Recommendations on the collection, use and exchange of various types of evidence prepared by the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) and Good Practices on the role of the authorities to promote the exchange of evidence from the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ). 

Lastly, the third session deals with ways to facilitate the use of information and evidence collected and shared by the military, with reference to the United Nations Guidelines developed within the framework of the Working Group against Terrorism (CTITF).
