To learn about the impact of climate change in Central America, predicting scenarios

Through EUROCLIMA+ , a programme funded by the European Union and whose climate governance component is managed by FIIAPP, an expert mission has been carried out with the objective of supporting the meteorological services of Guatemala and El Salvador in the recovery of data that allows the creation of climate scenarios (projections of future climate over a given territory), as well as in the implementation of quality controls in the digitized data series.  For this mission, two experts travelled to the country, one from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the other from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). 

Having reliable climate scenarios for decision-making is an evident need in Central American countries. The scenarios that will be developed will provide useful information on future climate conditions in the area, which will make it possible to assess the impact of climate change on different sectors, such as the economy, defence or infrastructures, which will allow the planning of the corresponding adaptation measures in advance. 

This visit arises from a previous one, which occurred in May 2018, when experts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) visited the institutions that include the meteorological services of several countries in the region (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama). As a result, the need to have climate scenarios for Central America, which had already begun to materialize, was identified.
