Spanish experts from the Office of Patents and Marks work with their Brazilian counterparts to strengthen the country’s system for granting green patents
FIIAPP organized an activity in which experts from the Spanish Office of Patents and Marks (OEPM) spent a week visiting the Brazilian National Industrial Property Institute (INPI).
The activity formed part of the Climate Governance component, managed by FIIAPP, of the Euroclima+ programme, financed by the European Union. The aim was to improve the knowledge and technical skills needed to promote and grant green patents as a mechanism for responding to the commitments made by Brazil in the Paris Agreement (NDC). In addition, INPI’s needs were identified for bringing them into line with the international agenda for adapting to and mitigating climate change.
During the week’s work, the Spanish specialists mobilized for this mission performed tasks including outreach regarding Green patents, identified the training needs for adapting to and mitigating climate change, sought examiners in the area of green technologies and the policy approach for improving the processing of applications for green patents.
The delegation was accompanied by the Republic’s Director of Patents, as they discussed the design of a plan to promote green patents in Brazil, by training examiners and informing the stakeholders in the Brazilian government, so that industrial property can contribute to the commitments made on climate change.
