Several practical documents have been produced during the project's first year to facilitate Euro-Mediterranean judicial cooperation
EuroMed Justice IV held its second monitoring meeting in addition to an international conference after the first year of work. A meeting that served to review the achievements made and to consider about the next challenges.
The European Commission-funded and FIIAPP-managed project aims to improve the justice systems of the Mediterranean basin countries through regional cooperation with several EU countries. Specifically, it seeks to consolidate judicial independence and improve access to justice through a participatory and collaborative approach between the two regions.
The work performed included the drafting of pioneering documents that will serve as practical tools for regional cooperation in criminal matters, the comparative analysis of the so-called Crimex documents on different topics: Cybercrime, financing of terrorism, prevention of extreme violence, etc. and the drafting of manuals and plans of action. The meeting also saw the creation of the EuroMed General Prosecutors Forum, whose first meeting was held in Madrid with the first collaboration agreement.
Both meetings were attended by representatives from the Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Lebanon, Palestine and Tunisia), from the Ministries of Justice from the EU countries and from the European Commission (DG NEAR and DG Justice and Customers).
Several international organisations were also present including Eurojust, the European Judges Network (EJN), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Counter-Terrorism Committee (UNCTED).
