The Czech experience, a reference for Georgia in controlling the risk of accidents involving dangerous substances

Around ten members of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia took part in a study visit to the Czech Environmental Information Agency (CENIA), which collaborates with FIIAPP and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy of the Netherlands in managing the twinning project for “supporting the Georgian Ministry of Environment” in introducing an integrated system to prevent and control pollution in the country.

The visit focussed on the implementation of legislation on controlling the risks of accidents involving dangerous substances in the Czech Republic based on the “Seveso Directives” taken by the EU in 1976 after the industrial accident in the Italian city of the same name.

The participants consider the Czech experience to be a reference for Georgia and conclude that developing this legislation requires detailed evaluation processes and coordination between the competent authorities.

This twinning project between Spain and Georgia aims to contribute to the adaptation of Georgian legislation to European directives on industrial pollution with the aim of increasing the capability of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia when it comes to imposing more effective controls to lessen the polluting effect of the country’s industries.
