Laboratory experts received instruction in handling biological threats under one of the NRBQ projects funded by the European Commission
In the Philippines, Malaysia and Laos, the workshop that has trained laboratory experts in biohazard management as part of project NRBQ 46 has ended. It was funded by the European Commission with the aim of improving the NRBQ (nuclear, radiological, biological and chemical) capabilities of the South East Asian region to tackle risk reduction in three technical areas: first response to a threat, biosecurity and the legal framework.
Previously, this training had been given in Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. Brunei will be the last of the countries in the region to take part in this programme.
Among the main objectives reached was mapping laboratories and biological facilities in the region and developing a flexible and sustainable system for training people in biohazard management that can be applied to a wide range of countries.
Following the regional instructor training workshop, each country is replicating the biohazard management training, as well as training in laboratory management and maintenance.
These activities are designed to improve regional cooperation and standardise international regulations on the safe management of biological waste. A focus that strengthens regional cooperation and creates a network of NRBQ risk management experts.
The project is part of the network of EU Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence in eight regions of the world.
