Calls for proposals for two of the sectoral components of the EUROCLIMA+ regional programme of the European Union were launched
The regional programme EUROCLIMA+ just launched its first calls for proposals aimed at the governments and institutions of Latin America for management and reduction of disaster risk (drought and flooding) and protection of forests, biodiversity and ecosystems.
EUROCLIMA+ is a regional cooperation programme of the European Union for strengthening the capacity for climate change mitigation and adaptation of 18 Latin American countries. The Programme promotes interventions that benefit the Latin American region as a whole with potential impacts at regional, national and local level.
EUROCLIMA+ is starting its third phase with the opening of these two sectoral components, which will be accompanied by another four considered particularly important for climate change adaptation and mitigation, defined jointly with Latin American authorities: urban mobility, water management in the context of climate-resilience, resilient food production and, lastly, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The activities being pursued in EUROCLIMA+ encompass political dialogue as well as technical and financial support for developing and implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation policies in Latin America.
In addition to the various sectors, the programme includes a horizontal approach, led by FIIAPP and with the participation of GIZ, which will serve to facilitate an ongoing, intense and strategic dialogue about climate change and knowledge management aimed particularly at implementation of the NDCs, climate services, climate funding and education and awareness-raising. All of this will have a cross-cutting vision of gender and participation integrated in it.
The programme aims to support the integration of climate change mitigation measures in the regulatory framework to strengthen economic growth and social development along with environmental and climate protection. The programme arises at an especially relevant moment, at which countries are having to prepare themselves for implementation of the Paris Agreement and their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) for 2020, as well as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
EUROCLIMA+ is mainly being organised by five agencies of the EU Member States selected based on their background in the implementation of projects in the region and in the area of climate change and the environment: the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), Agence Française de Developpement (AFD), Expertise France (EF), and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
