Representatives of 15 Latin American countries involved in the fight against organised crime have reaffirmed their commitment to the EU programme
Representatives of 15 Latin American countries attending the meeting in Costa Rica
The EL PAcCTO programme, led by FIIAPP and Expertise France, held the first meeting of Focal Points, in San José, which was attended by 15 of the 18 countries involved in the project.
The Focal Points belong to key institutions in the fight against organised crime in the region. All of them demonstrated their commitment to advancing towards a legal, law enforcement and penal model that will lay the groundwork for the construction of a more secure society with lower crime rates.
At the meeting, the participants also expressed the needs and demands of each country. It should be noted that this is the first time the representatives of all sectors involved in the criminal justice system have met to address problems and solutions in a comprehensive manner.
The Attaché for Cooperation and Regional Cooperation of the European Union Delegation in Managua, Ricardo Álvarez, was in charge of opening the kick-off session. Also present were the magistrate of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General of Costa Rica and various Costa Rican deputy ministers.
EL PAcCTO is a programme funded by the European Commission aimed at fighting organised crime in Latin America. It has three main lines: law enforcement, legal and prosecutorial, and penal cooperation. It is led by the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP-Spain) and Expertise France (France), with the assistance of two coordinating partners: Italy’s Instituto Italo-Latino Americano (IILA) and Portugal’s Instituto Camôes.
