Ankara, the capital of Turkey, hosted the kick-off event for the project on the reinforcement of the Turkish fisheries management system.

The goal of the project is to reinforce the Turkish fisheries management system and adapt it to current European legislation on fisheries, the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Concrete goals are to improve the legal and technical capacity for the monitoring, control and surveillance of fisheries, to develop measures against illegal fishing, and to further improve the national fisheries data collection system in Turkey.

The Common Fisheries Policy of the European Union aims to ensure the creation of an agriculture and fishing sector that respects the environment, that is economically and socially sustainable, and that they provide consumers with a source of healthy food suitable for consumption.

The kick-off event was attended by the Spanish ambassador to Turkey, Rafael Mendivil; the FIIAPP director, Pedro Flores; the Spanish deputy minister of fisheries, Alberto López-Asenjo; Turkey’s undersecretary of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Nusret Yazici; and the deputy head of the EU delegation in Turkey, Gabriel Munera Vinals.

Reinforcement of the fisheries management system in Turkey

This is a Twinning project between Turkey and Spain which is funded by the European Commission with a budget of nearly €2 million and managed by FIIAPP.

Implementation of the project will include the participation of experts from Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment (MAPAMA).
