Inauguration of the project to support Legal Aid Services in Turkey, funded by the EU and managed by FIIAPP.

A new international cooperation project is starting in Ankara, Turkey, aimed at supporting Legal Aid Services in Turkey. A project funded by the European Commission and managed by the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP).
The objective of the international cooperation project is to increase citizen awareness of their legal rights and to ensure free legal aid for the society in accordance with Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which states that everyone, regardless of their economic situation, must be treated fairly by the law.
With a grant of €1.3 million from the European Union, this project will begin with an analysis of the EU´s best practices and subsequently develop a global strategy. The objective is to restructure the legal aid system in order to offer more effective, responsible and transparent service to people entitled to use the legal aid services. The strategy will take into account the different needs of the beneficiary groups, with special attention to vulnerable people.
Over the 24 months of the project’s duration, the beneficiary institutions of the project — the Turkish Bar Association and the country’s Ministry of Justice — will cooperate with Spanish, French and Lithuanian justice ministries.
The project is part of the work being done by the Turkish government in its efforts to ensure that legal services are provided fully and fairly to all sectors of society.
The project launch event, held on 8th September of this year in the Turkish capital, was attended by, among others, the Turkish Minister of Justice, H.E. Bekir Bozdağ, the Lithuanian ambassador of Turkey, and the Deputy Head of Mission of the Spanish Embassy, Pablo Bárbara Gómez.
