Uruguay has implemented a new model for the rural area of Orinoquía, with a dispersed and mainly indigenous population, and a National Rural Health Plan. Colombia, which is initiating a similar process with the implementation of its new comprehensive healthcare model (MIAS) in remote areas, aims to integrate inputs from the Uruguayan experience into its process.

A delegation from the Colombian Ministry of Health took part in an exchange visit in March to Uruguay to learn about the country’s primary healthcare system in depth.
The visit, which included meetings at the Ministry of Health and in hospitals, enabled dialogue on training and management experiences in family and community health with the institutions of the health and education sectors which have been leading this process in Uruguay. In addition, the Colombian delegation participated in the Fourth Ibero-American Congress on Family and Community Medicine, which took place that same week in Montevideo and in which certain key strategies applicable to the Colombia context were identified.
The EUROsociAL Programme, financed by the European Commission and managed by the FIIAPP, is supporting implementation of Colombia’s Comprehensive Healthcare Model (MIAS), which is the cornerstone of the reform of the General System of Social Security in Health. Beyond this visit, the two countries showed interest in continuing their bilateral cooperation to accompany the important reforms underway in primary healthcare in Colombia and Uruguay.
