Honduras moves forward in approving a new Law on Protection of Personal Data.

The Honduran Institute for Access to Public Information, with the collaboration of the EUROsociAL Programme, financed by the European Union, held a workshop in March to present its proposal for the Law on Protection of Personal Data to institutional representatives of civil society and the Honduran government for review.

The activity had two major objectives: on the one hand, to present the proposed law the institute has been working on for the past two years to Honduran society; and on the other, to enhance this proposal with suggestions and specific recommendations from each of the sectors involved. Given the scope and complexity of the regulation, sectoral meetings have also been proposed with different institutions, which would enable examination of specific aspects of the text in greater depth.

The teams from the IAIP and EUROsociALmet with representatives of the Supreme Electoral Court, the National Office for Registration of Persons, the Commission on Banking and Insurance of the Bank of Honduras, and the Bureau of Credit and Financial Solvency. Over the month of March, it is hoped that other meetings will be held with additional stakeholders to complete the process of public review and discussion of the proposal.

Lastly, in coming months, the IAIP will work to collect the 3,000 signatures needed to submit, through a popular initiative, the proposed law to the National Congress of Honduras.

The event was attended by a large delegation from the Institute for Access to Public Information, headed by its president and two commissioners, as well as the EUROsociAL Programme, represented by Willy Hick, Cooperation Attaché of the European Union Delegation in Honduras, Fernando de la Cruz, representative of the CEDDET Foundation, and Javier Puyol, the international expert responsible for the entire process of legal advising for drafting the regulation
