From 7th to 10th July, EUROsociAL, the FIIAPP-led cooperation programme of the European Union, is holding its second programme meeting in Antigua, Guatemala around the central idea of the quality of public spending; it is also hosting five thematic seminars in the following action areas: social policies, public finance, combating corruption, citizen security and prevention of gender violence.
EUROsociAL, the European Union’s cooperation programme with Latin America for social cohesion, is bringing together representatives of Europe and Latin America in the Spanish Cooperation Training Centre in Antigua, Guatemala to debate and reflect on the challenges of and opportunities for improving the quality of public spending and its impact on social cohesion. This meeting will be opened by the President of the Republic of Guatemala, Otto Pérez Molina, accompanied by the EU Ambassador to the country, Stella Zervoudaki, and FIIAPP Director, Pedro Flores.
In addition, five thematic seminars for specifically debating productive inclusion, public finance, economic-financial corruption, citizen security and the eradication of gender violence are also being held. In this sense, while the seminars address sectoral themes, they will serve as a context for a parallel and shared debate on the quality of public spending, a cross-cutting issue that necessarily goes hand in hand with a discussion of the value of public policy and the importance of the functioning of the public sector and institutions.
Over the four days of the meeting, representatives of Latin American and European countries will be present from government institutions—notably Guatemala with the presence of Héctor Mauricio López, Minister of Governance; Edgar Leonel Rodríguez Lara, Minister of Social Development; and the State Prosecutor, Thelma Esperanza Aldana Hernández—in addition to international experts on the different themes included in this activity.
