Today was the opening, within the framework of the COPOLAD Programme, led by the Spanish Government Delegation for the National Plan on Drugs (DGPNSD) and the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), of the ‘Second Workshop for Documentation Centre Managers: Implementation of the Ibero-American Library on Drugs and Drug Addiction (BIDA)’.

This activity aims to make progress in implementation of the Ibero-American Library on Drugs and Drug Addiction (BIDA) by offering training on its different functionalities to the countries that will initially comprise the platform (Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay).
In the first phase of this project, completed in 2012, managers of documentation centres in these Ibero-American countries met to agree on a design for a virtual platform for cooperation and coordination among the different documentation resources in their territories.
With this initiative, they aimed to create and promote an efficient system of inter-library lending to facilitate access to specialized, quality information on drug dependency and addiction, with a special emphasis on scientific documents published in Spanish and Portuguese, which, up to now, have been difficult to find and access through databases in the English-speaking world.
The virtual BIDA platform is already a reality that in coming months will give professionals, scientists, researchers and the general public access to a Catalogue of Journals and an extensive Document Collection focused on drugs and drug addiction which cover both highly specialized aspects and basic information and dissemination needs.
