Joint FIIAPP-Spanish National Police Report on Drug Policy

The Director of FIIAPP, Pedro Flores, and Director General of Police, Ignacio Cosidó presented the report “Situational Analysis of Drug Trafficking. A Police Perspective” in Madrid this afternoon.

The FIIAPP director pointed out that FIIAPP has completed over 280 security-related projects worldwide in the past 15 years. At the presentation, Pedro Flores stated that “This publication is the fruit of the efforts of the FIIAPP-AMERIPOL project, a project financed by the EU Instrument for Stability”.

This publication, developed in the framework of the AMERIPOL-UE project, analyses the situation in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru in terms of the traffic of drugs towards Europe and its growing relationship with organised crime and money laundering. International cooperation is key for acting against concealment methods and drug routes in producing, transit and destination countries. Pedro Flores and Ignacio Cosidó were accompanied by the European Commission’s Head of Representation in Spain, Francisco Fonseca, and the coordinator of the AMERIPOL-EU Project, the Chief Inspector of the Spanish National Police, Marcos Alvar.

The study presented today is an in-depth exploration of the current situation of one of the most important crimes on a global level: drug trafficking. The networks involved in drug trafficking act in international scenarios and in combination with other types of criminal acts. The publication analyses the drug trafficking situation in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru, concluding that the relationship between organised crime, drug trafficking and money laundering is growing. Moreover, the investigation emphasises the opening of new transport routes for narcotics, such the African one, and new smuggling methods. Faced with these challenges, international cooperation is key for acting jointly and providing a firm and adequate police response to the criminal phenomenon of drug trafficking.
